Microsoft's Wedge 3D lens

The Microsoft Applied Sciences Group has developed a new lens (see photo) that enables viewers to enjoy 3D content without having to wear those dorky glasses. Writer Emil Protalinski explains how the Microsoft system works: The thin lens is placed behind a standard LCD panel, replacing the traditional backlight. The system then delivers 3D video to the viewer via two different images-one to the left eye and one to the right eye, regardless of where the viewer is sitting. A camera tracks the viewer, enabling the Wedge lens to steer light to specific areas of the screen.
