According to a survey conducted by ZweigWhite, a business services firm for the architectural and engineering sectors, only 51 percent of project managers receive any job-specific training before being promoted to the position. Less than one third of all surveyed firms reported that they always provide project management training to new project managers. The survey provides additional insight in the areas project administration, budgets and schedules to training, responsibilities and compensation. "Project manager is a role of many dimensions. [It's] a skill we will always be learning-no matter how many years we've been practicing it," says Christine Brack, principal of ZweigWhite.

The report breaks down the data by firm type, staff size, region, growth rate, and client base. Principals and project managers alike can use this report to assess and improve their firm's project management systems. To peruse ZweigWhite's offerings on project management, click here:

In her blog, marketing consultant Laura Lake discusses the fine line between balancing good marketing and overwhelming your prospects. Due to the many communications conduits at our disposal (email, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook), Lake ponders the idea that technology may have made us more efficient but less effective. Bombarding your contact lists may be detrimental. "When you over-communicate with your customers, you will find that your message is being lost, your audience encounters confusion and worst yet-you will even begin to lose that audience one-by-one," says Lake.

Before your followers start unsubscribing and dropping out, Lake suggests sending out a survey that inquires how your constituents would like to hear from you-and what information piques their interest. To learn about the right amount marketing, click here:

While the larger, new-construction projects may be fewer and farther between, you can still provide the magic of your craft in more affordable ways. One viable option is wireless lighting. Changing the mood of a room via different lighting scenarios, turning on the lights from a drive-up car, providing a nighttime security walkway and many other "enlightening" features are all available via wireless lighting systems-just like their fully wired counterparts. What drives Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group? In this article, his comments include: "Doing business in a responsible and fair way is just as important as being profitable, if not more so. Because this is what will engage and motivate your employees...they will be more effective and will deliver better service, which in turn will encourage customers to come back and spend money with you.

"We had a clear vision of how we would deliver what the customer wanted (with a sense of fun!). We see things from the customer's perspective...[And] be prepared for a bumpy ride. Most entrepreneurs fail the first time they enter a market-or at very least have to recover from a tricky scrape." To fly with Sir Richard, click here:

You Can’t Hurry Love…and Marketing

July 27, 2010 By MarkElson Be the first to comment
Just like pulling an all-nighter during exams, marketing shortcuts don't work, says Drew McLellan, CEO of McLellan Marketing. Whether you have your own in-house department or are hiring an agency, McLellan holds up a big "stop" sign if the following conditions appear:
You can't describe how you are genuinely different from your competitors;
You can't describe your ideal customer;
You don't have a broad brand/marketing strategy to prevent working in a vacuum;
You lack a follow-up system for sales leads.

"Don't short change the process, says McLellan. "If you do some strategic thinking up front, the tactics and tools actually get produced much faster and more cost effectively." To read the entire article without taking a shortcut, click here:
